Everything You Need to Know
When is the best time to visit Zanzibar?
The best time to visit Zanzibar depends on what kind of island experience you’re after:
- June–October (Dry Season): Perfect for sunshine, swimming, and relaxing beach days. The weather is dry and pleasantly warm — ideal after a safari.
- December–March: The hottest months, great for diving, snorkeling, and clear turquoise waters.
- April–May (Green Season): Rainier but beautifully lush, with fewer crowds and lower rates — perfect for travelers seeking tranquility and photography.
What can I expect from a safari with African Safaris Experts?
Expect a seamless and sophisticated island escape. We hand-pick boutique beachfront lodges, arrange private transfers, and curate authentic experiences — from spice tours and dhow cruises to snorkeling safaris and candlelit dinners by the sea. Every detail is designed to help you unwind in luxury, surrounded by the Indian Ocean’s beauty.
Can I combine Zanzibar with a safari in Kenya or Tanzania?
Absolutely. Zanzibar pairs beautifully with an East African safari. After days of thrilling game drives, fly directly from the Serengeti, Arusha, or Nairobi to Zanzibar for a few days of barefoot luxury on the beach. We tailor every detail — from flights and transfers to the perfect lodge balance between adventure and relaxation.
What are the top things to do in Zanzibar?
Zanzibar offers far more than beaches. Explore the historic Stone Town, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and visit a traditional spice plantation to discover the island’s aromatic history. Snorkel or dive at Mnemba Atoll, watch red colobus monkeys in Jozani Forest, and sail into the sunset on a traditional dhow. Don’t miss the quiet charm of Chwaka Bay and the lively coastal villages of Nungwi and Paje.
Is Zanzibar safe for travelers?
Yes. Zanzibar is one of East Africa’s most peaceful destinations. Tourism is a major part of the local economy, and both beach resorts and Stone Town are well-managed and secure. As always, use common sense — avoid unlit streets at night, keep valuables safe, and respect local customs. Visitors consistently describe Zanzibar as welcoming, calm, and incredibly friendly.
Do I need a visa to enter Zanzibar?
Yes — Zanzibar follows Tanzania’s entry regulations. Most travelers require a Tanzania eVisa, easily obtained online before travel. You can also apply on arrival at Zanzibar International Airport. Your passport should be valid for at least six months beyond your departure date, with at least one blank page.
What should I pack for my Zanzibar stay?
Pack light, breathable clothing for warm tropical weather. Essentials include:
- Swimwear, sunglasses, and a wide-brimmed hat for sunny beach days
- Light long sleeves for evening mosquito protection
- Reef-safe sunscreen, insect repellent, and sandals or flip-flops
- Modest clothing (shoulders and knees covered) for visiting villages and Stone Town
- A small waterproof bag or dry pack for dhow cruises and snorkelling trips
For travelers connecting from safari, soft-sided luggage works best for internal flights.
